5 BEST PARKS IN RALEIGH NC!
These are hands down the BEST parks in Raleigh, NC!
Raleigh NC is known for its’ incredible park system and the boost it brings to the overall quality of life in the city. This blog will focus on the best parks in Raleigh, which generally have quite a bit of variety in their offerings.
First up, let’s start with Raleigh’s staple, Pullen Park.

Pullen Park
First opened in 1887, Pullen Park was the first public park in North Carolina, and is actually the 16th oldest in the world.
It’s located right next to NC State University, and has quite a variety to offer.
Centered around it’s own lake, you can rent pedal boats or take a relaxing walk it and enjoy some breathtaking views.
It has it’s own softball fields and tennis courts, and even a public indoor aquatic center that can be used year-round on a pay per visit basis. And, its’ theatre in the park has a variety of shows that draw quite a crowd.
For the kids, there is a carousel located in the center of the park, train rides that circle the park, and a large playground that offers a variety of spaces to play. The park also has concessions open during select times.
With all that Pullen Park has to offer, you can see why it’s one of Raleigh’s most popular outdoor spaces.
Moving on to Raleigh’s largest park and what many consider as THE best park in Raleigh NC, William B. Umstead Park.

Umstead Park
Umstead Park is located on the northern side of Raleigh, directly south of the RDU airport.
It is a massive, wooded park that spans around 5,600 acres and has three lakes throughout the park. This is an amazing escape to nature in the middle of greater Raleigh area that is very popular with residents.
Umstead Park is most popular for its’ numerous hiking trails, which span over 34 miles combined through the woods. There are also 13 miles of biking and horseback trails, so this is a great place for a horseback ride as well.
There are seasonal paddle boat rentals, and fishing allowed in the lakes as well.
People also enjoy camping at Umstead Park, as there are quite a few campsites spread throughout the park that you can reserve that are very popular with the locals as well as youth programs.
Next up is another massive space, Dorothea Dix Park.

Dorothea Dix Park
Located just west of downtown Raleigh, Dorothea Dix Park is another one of Raleigh’s largest parks at around 308 acres.
It is actually the site of North Carolina’s first mental hospital, and the buildings and facilities are still located on site and are slowly being repurposed.
The park is best known for it’s sunflower field, which bloom every summer and draw large crowds to see. It also has a small playground and a large dog park.
There are massive open fields that are great for recreation and even flying drones or remote controlled airplanes. And, they provide some of the best views of downtown Raleigh!
Dix Park has been constantly expanding, and has a large development planned to be complete in the next couple of years that will include several playground spaces for kids, walking trails, splash areas, spaces for dogs to run, and more!
Moving on to another popular park near downtown, Lake Johnson.

Lake Johnson
Located just southwest of downtown Raleigh, Lake Johnson is a great spot to exercise on nice days.
It’s main attraction is it’s approximate 3 mile paved trail that surrounds the main lake, and it also has some unpaved trails as well. It is a great space to walk, run, or ride your bike, and it has a long bridge that provides some great views.
There’s a dock that allows for kayak and paddle board rentals, and you can launch your own personal, non-motorized board or boat as well.
On the west side of the park lays the Woodland Center for events as well as the nature preserve that has wooded trails. And, there is a public pool that can be used in the summer time on a pay per visit basis.
The last park is further north in mid-town Raleigh, Shelley Lake.

Shelley Lake
Located just north of I-440 off Millbrook Rd, Shelley Lake has a great variety of activities to partake in.
It has an activity center for art and pottery classes, a great playground for the kids that has been recently renovated, and basketball courts near it’s main parking lot.
The main attraction is the 2 mile, paved trail that surrounds the lake. This mostly shaded trail is a great place for exercise or a relaxing walk, and it also connects into the city’s main greenway system that can take you miles around town.
Shelley Lake also has a couple open fields that can be used for sport practices or general recreation.
While these parks are known as the BEST parks in Raleigh NC, there are tons of other parks around as Raleigh itself has over 200.
